Parenteral nutrition supplemented with short-chain fatty acids: effect on the small-bowel mucosa in normal rats.

چکیده
When enteral nutrition is excluded from animals maintained solely with total parenteral nutrition (TPN), atrophy of the intestinal mucosa is observed. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced in the colon by the fermentation of dietary carbohydrates and fiber polysaccharides and have been shown to stimulate mucosal-cell mitotic activity in the intestine. This study compared the effects of an intravenous and an intracecal infusion of SCFAs on the small-bowel mucosa. Rats received standard TPN, TPN with SCFAs (sodium acetate, propionate, and butyrate), TPN with an intracecal infusion of SCFAs, or rat food. After 7 d jejunal and ileal mucosal weights, DNA, RNA, and protein were determined. Standard TPN produced significant atrophy of the jejunal and ileal mucosa. Both the intracecal and intravenous infusion of SCFAs significantly reduced the mucosal atrophy associated with TPN. The intravenous and intracolonic infusion of SCFAs were equally effective in inhibiting small-bowel mucosal atrophy.

Intestinal adaptation occurs independently of parenteral long-chain triacylglycerol and with no change in intestinal eicosanoids after mid-small bowel resection in rats.
The role of enteral or parenteral long-chain triacylglycerol (LCT) in the complex process of intestinal adaptation is poorly defined and may involve alterations in eicosanoid synthesis. Our objective was to determine whether provision of parenteral LCT stimulates eicosanoid synthesis and resection-induced intestinal adaptation. We assessed small bowel structural adaptation, the fatty acid profi...

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether continuous enteral supplementation of L-arginine can stimulate intestinal adaptation in a rat model of short bowel syndrome (SBS). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups of 10 each: Sham rats underwent bowel transaction and received continuous enteral nutrition (Control group, Con group), SBS rats underwent 75% small ...
متن کاملEffect of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) on jejunal mucosa mass and protein synthesis.
The effects of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) on jejunal mucosa mass and protein synthesis were compared with results from previous experiments with rats fed by parenteral nutrition or enteral nutrition. Other published studies have also been analysed. Three experimental models were studied. In the traumatic model, production of a femoral fracture was followed by Kirschner pin insertion into ...
متن کاملEffect of Short and Long-Term Treatment with Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Scopolamine-Induced Amnesia
Two omega-3 fatty acids including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are essential for the physiologic function of neuronal cell membrane. Normal function of neuronal cell membrane requires appropriate composition of fatty in its structure. Present study was designed to compare the effect of short-term and long-term pretreatment with omega-3 fatty acids on scopolamine...
